CBD for our pets?

CBD for our pets?

Pets are part of our life. Therefore, when we want to keep them strong and happy, without subjecting them to the adverse effects of some of the conventional treatments, we need to inquire about the alternatives available on the market.

A safe way to ensure the well-being of those dear companions with whom we have strong emotional ties is to use cannabidiol or CBD oil, a substance capable of providing numerous benefits due to its ability to act on various disorders and discomforts.

Despite the fact that many animals could use CBD oil, this article is essentially referring to dogs and cats because they are the most common pets that we usually live with.

What is CBD and why use it for pets?

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is one of many compounds called cannabinoids that are extracted from a variety of the cannabis plant known as hemp, the genetic line that is industrially developed and legally marketed, due to its low content of psychoactive compounds present in it.

Many of the benefits that CBD provides to humans can also be extended to vertebrate animals, since they all have an endocannabinoid system that allows them to assimilate it. Therefore, our pets can benefit from its use to alleviate some symptoms of certain disorders, including discomfort caused by aging or stress that loud noises frequently cause them.

Which are your main benefits?

The investigations that have been carried out with animals conclude that CBD can be used in our pets to:

  • Regulate appetite.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Can relieve some gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Help with sleep disorders.
  • Stimulates the body´s energy.
  • Produces general well-being.

  • Does it produce adverse effects?

The numerous studies that have been done on CBD and its uses have managed to determine that it is a natural alternative without the highly negative effects of other options available on the market, and with very low risk when used in a controlled manner.

It is also important to emphasize that CBD therapies can be administered without fear of altering our pets habitual behavior, because it does not produce psychotropic effects, which means it does not cause a "high" or euphoric feeling in pets.

What is the best way to administer CBD to pets?

Currently, a large number of products formulated based on CBD[1] are marketed. Although CBD can be administered in a number of ways, when it comes to giving it to pets it is especially easy in the form of an oil as the drops can be placed under the tongue, added to food or a treat, rubbed into their fur or skin ear, or simply apply on the paw to lick it.

It is best to use CBD oil exclusively for pets - a wide range of products specially formulated for them is currently available - since the terpenes and phenols in some formulations for humans can cause allergic reactions in some dogs and cats.

Many pet owners are turning to the use of CBD products to treat their companion animals' symptoms and improve their quality of life. However, it is important to consult with a veterinarian before using any CBD product on your pet.

[1] The CBD products sold by Open Hemp Shop come exclusively from hemp, the genetic line of the cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3% of THC (the psychoactive component of the plant) and therefore its sale in the United States is federally legal since that in 2018 the Agricultural Law was approved.
