Is CBD good for athletes?

Is CBD good for athletes?

All sports, especially the most strenuous ones, subject the human body's muscles, tendons, and joints to intense efforts capable of causing minor injuries that, in turn, generate inflammatory processes that are usually very painful. As a result, some people experience intense muscle pain after training, competing, or performing any type of exercise, while others experience inflammation and/or previous injuries, and still others may feel nauseated or extremely tired.

Although sleep and rest are the usual remedies for allowing the body to recover after exercise, on many occasions, analgesics and anti-inflammatories are required to alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms and get back in shape. Furthermore, extreme fatigue may affect the immune system, in which case action will be required to restore it to normal levels.

Another common side effect of sports is nervous wear and tear, which occurs when a large number of stressful stimuli, both physical and psychological, stimulate the activity of the central nervous system, causing overloads that alter its operation. Indeed, many athletes are subjected not only to a wide range of anxiety and stress caused by competing but also to the deterioration caused by intense and continuous physical effort.

A perfect complement?

CBD's potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties have yet to be adequately documented in populations that participate in professional sports, as specific, controlled studies are required to ensure its efficacy and security.

However, many athletes are supplementing with CBD products, to the point where its use in elite sports has increased exponentially in recent years, most likely due to its removal from the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of prohibited substances in 2018. (WADA).

This surge in the use of CBD in sports can serve as a catalyst for new research on the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids, particularly those related to interactions with the endocannabinoid system, an important physiological system present in the body that is still poorly understood due to its recent discovery. On this subject, please see our 05/16/22 article, "Why does CBD interact so well with our body?"

Its application in non-professional exercise

The desire to look after oneself and highlight the results of one's physical effort has led many non-professionals to look for natural substances that are neither addictive nor toxic.

CBD is gaining popularity in this search because its use, for those who do not need to compete or subject their bodies to extreme efforts, can provide some beneficial effects such as pain relief associated with physical activity, with a low risk of side effects.

Some consumption suggestions

CBD is marketed in a variety of forms and presentations, each with a different use depending on the discomfort being treated.

When it comes to muscle pain, applying creams and lotions to the skin is the most recommended method of relief, whereas consuming a few drops of CBD[1] oil may be the best way to relieve stress or relax.
